WAYNE ROONEY received a World Cup boost today as he was told he had only suffered minor ankle ligament damage.
Manchester United star Rooney had a scan yesterday when he returned to the UK after the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich.
United have confirmed it showed there is no break, which means Rooney's presence in South Africa should not be threatened.
But the injury is expected to rule him out for a month, although United boss Alex Ferguson will reveal the full extent of the injury tomorrow morning.
A United spokesperson said: "We are pleased to report that Wayne has not suffered a fracture.
"The scan revealed only minor ligament damage."
Rooney could be back in action for the Champions League semi-final, providing United overhaul Bayern's 2-1 first-leg advantage.
A four-week spell on the sidelines would have him back in action in time to face Sunderland on May 1.
