INTER MILAN have swooped for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez

INTER MILAN have sensationally swooped for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

The Serie A champions made their move at the weekend - just when everyone thought they were chasing England manager Fabio Capello.
SunSport first revealed Inter wanted Benitez two weeks ago but now the Italian giants have closed in and are waiting to see whether Benitez is tempted.
Inter president Massimo Moratti said: "Benitez is a manager I have always considered very good but for the moment he is engaged."
An Italian source added: "Inter have been happy for everyone to think they want Capello as it's taken everyone's attention away from Benitez."
But Inter fear the Spaniard will still turn down a deal that will double his £4.5million-a-year wages as he has an almost impossible act to follow.
Under ex-boss Jose Mourinho, Inter won an historic treble including the Champions League.
Mourinho, unveiled as Real Madrid chief yesterday, said: "I've gifted Inter's new boss the chance to play for three titles already."
An insider added: "How could Rafa possibly do any better than Jose? The only way is down."

Beckford pens four-year Everton deal

Everton manager David Moyes has strengthened his attacking options by signing Jermaine Beckford from Leeds on a four-year contract.
Beckford cannot wait to play in the top flight just four years after plying his trade in non-league football and working as a windscreen fitter.
The former Wealdstone striker has joined the Toffees after having his contract cancelled by Leeds.
Beckford, 26, scored 31 goals for the Yorkshire club last season, the final one coming on the final day against Bristol Rovers, which clinched promotion from League One.
That took his tally for Leeds to 85 in 150 appearances and caught the eye of Everton manager David Moyes.
After passing a medical at the club's Finch Farm training complex, Beckford said: "I wish the season was starting tomorrow.
"I've been fortunate enough to score goals at the clubs that I've been at and hopefully I'll be able to do that here as well. I hope I can hit the ground running.
"Finch Farm is terrific. It makes such a difference when you've got somewhere like this. I can imagine the players coming in here smiling and if you are happy when you are training, it can only be good."
Beckford is looking forward to pitting his wits against some of the world's top players.
He said: "I am excited by it. It's going to be a test, I know that, but I am looking forward to it.
"I want to test myself at the highest level and luckily for me, David Moyes showed an interest in me, showed some faith in me and hopefully I can repay that.
"I've been impressed a lot by him. He seems like the type of guy who will sit down and tell you where you're going wrong, what you're doing right and what you might need to work on.
"It is a club I can learn from and it can help me develop into a better player. Fingers crossed, I can be really involved in taking this club where it wants to be."

Mourinho officially as new Real boss

Jose Mourinho has been presented at the Santiago Bernabeu as the new coach of Real Madrid, signing a four-year deal with the Spanish side.
The Portuguese coach moves from Serie A outfit Inter Milan, where he helped guide the side to a Coppa Italia, Serie A and Champions League Treble-winning campaign.
Mourinho, who becomes the Spanish giants' ninth coach in six years, replaces Manuel Pellegrini.
Speaking today, Real sporting director Jorge Valdano said: "Mourinho has signed a contract for four seasons.
"It's an honour to have with us one of the most prestigious coaches in the world.
"We are delighted to have him here with us.
"The best thing for our club right now, is to have Mourinho with us."
Mourinho, 47, terminated his contract with Inter last week after two seasons at the club.
Real have paid Inter a reported eight million euros (£6.8million) in compensation.
Mourinho said: "I don't know if I was born to coach Real Madrid but I was born to be a football coach.
"I love important challenges.
"I am Jose Mourinho and I don't change. I arrive with all my qualities and my defects.
"My attraction to Real Madrid is due to its history, its frustrations in recent years and its expectations to win.
"It's a unique club and I believe that not to coach Real leaves a void in a coach's career.
"Luckily, I've had a beautiful career and it makes me proud to have come here.
"I am very enthusiastic.
"I want my players to think that way.
"The beauty is not so much to train or play at Real, but to win at Real Madrid."
Real parted company with Pellegrini last week after a disappointing campaign.
They lost out to Barcelona in the title race and were knocked of the Champions League by Lyon in the first knockout stage.
"I think a coach needs to be ready to be sacked," Mourinho said. "But if a coach fears that, he doesn't work well and has great problems.
"I am a coach that has a lot of self-esteem and confidence and I don't think about the possibility of being sacked.
"I think four years of contract is enough to win, to build a strong team for the present and the future.
"The sacking of Pellegrini doesn't make me happy. I am never happy when a coach is sacked.
"But football is like that.
"I have a lot of confidence in my players, I have the hope that my new players have confidence in me."
Mourinho shed little light on what changes he will bring to Real but outlined his vision for the future of the club.
He said: "It's too early to speak about changes.
"I believe it's time to analyse the situation, to get to know my club, ask lots of questions and get answers.
"I need to realise the direction of my work.
"The most important thing is not the coach or the players but the club.
"We are too small compared to the dimension of the club.
"If we work as a group, it's not difficult to get results.
"I want this group to have an identity, to win everything.
"The strength of my team is always the team and not the individuals.
"Cristiano Ronaldo is an incredible player not only for Real but for the whole of football.
"Cristiano is a winner and it's not difficult to persuade him of this."
When asked if this was his biggest career challenge, Mourinho said: "I cannot say this is the biggest motivation in my career.
"My biggest ambition is always the next one. Right now it is Real Madrid.
"I dont change my level of ambition or motivation. I gave everything to every club where I have been and I will do the same here.
"I dont feel any kind of different pressure. I am a coach that improves day-by-day. I arrive with everything a coach can win at club football."
Mourinho refused to shed light on Real's transfer objectives but admitted few changes would be made with respect to last season's squad.
"I don't like to talk about players because their prices will go up if I do," Mourinho said.
"The club is happy with the roster of last season and so am I. We don't need major changes.
"We need three or four players for the coach to have more pg to be a summer with a lot of changes. I think it will be a more calm summer with all the focus on the World Cup."
Speaking of arch-rivals Barcelona, Mourinho said: "I am not anti-Barcelona.
"I am coach of Real but Barca doesn't worry me. My only concern is to grow Real.
"Barca are great rivals and we respect them. If I am hated at Barcel had kind words for Inter, the club he left after two successful seasons at the helm.
"I hope my former players can win everything in Italy but not the Champions League," he said.
"I cannot forget the group that Ive had. Inter has a team for the future.
"They will need a quality coach and the coach that arrives will need to be intelligent and follow the path he needs to follow.
"Whoever arrives will be lucky because they will get the chance to play in three finals, the Italian Supercup, European Supercup and World Club tournament, a present I have left."

CHELSEA are moving in on Darijo Srna

CHELSEA are moving in on Darijo Srna.

Croatia's Shakhtar Donetsk wing-back, 28, who can also play in midfield, hopes to seal a £14million switch this summer and join Carlo Ancelotti's Double winners for pre-season training.
Premier League rivals Spurs and German champions Bayern Munich are also in the hunt.
And Shakhtar skipper Srna said: "The deal is not done yet.
"I must get together with the Shakhtar president as we cannot discuss such matters over the phone."

Wenger said Yoann Gourcuff will replace Fabregas

ARSENE WENGER has lined up a £21.8million deal for Bordeaux ace Yoann Gourcuff - his No 1 choice to replace Cesc Fabregas.

Arsenal have already spoken to the France star's dad Christian to pave the way for a switch that will make Gourcuff the Gunners' record signing.
An Arsenal source said: "While every effort is being made to keep Cesc at the club the boss is working towards an alternative.
"He believes Gourcuff's finesse and grace will fit perfectly to Arsenal's way of playing and will make it an almost seamless transition if Cesc does go."
Wenger is desperate to keep Fabregas after the skipper asked for a move to boyhood club Barcelona.
Arsenal slapped an £80m price tag on their prized asset but it is accepted Fabregas will eventually sign for Barca for around £45m.
Gourcuff, 23, will be France's first-choice playmaker in the World Cup but has a £21.8m get-out clause at Bordeaux.
Wenger may struggle to bring that price down as Bordeaux president Jean Louis Triaud is still fuming at Wenger for nabbing his striker Marouane Chamakh on a free.
Yet cash-strapped Bordeaux are desperate to get Gourcuff off their wage bill after failing to net a European spot following a late-season collapse in the French League.
Gourcuff earns around £80,000 a week at Bordeaux, one of the highest contracts in French football.
He joined Bordeaux in a £14m deal from AC Milan last summer after a season on loan in France.

John Heitinga claims he has been made aware of interest from Manchester City

Everton defender John Heitinga claims he has been made aware of interest from Manchester City.
The Dutchman only arrived in English football last summer, joining the Toffees from Atletico Madrid.
He settled quickly into Premier League life and was a mainstay in David Moyes' plans throughout the 2009/10 campaign.
Able to operate at centre-half or as a holding midfielder, his versatility marks him out as a useful member of any squad.
His considerable ability has not been lost on City, who are prepared to spend big on new additions this summer.
Heitinga admits he has ambitions of joining a club fighting for top honours, which the Blues hope to be in the near future, but insists he is happy at Goodison Park for now.
He penned a long-term contract upon his arrival on Merseyside in 2009 and insists he has no intention of breaking that agreement any time soon.
"I have heard the reports, but nothing is serious as yet," Heitinga told De Telegraaf.
"City have ambitions and I am always looking to move to a bigger club.
"But I have a contract for four years, without any get-out clause in it, so I will fully focus myself on Everton. I am very happy at this club."
Heitinga is currently away with the Dutch national side preparing for this summer's World Cup finals.

Bolton bid for Boaz Myhill

Bolton have pinpointed Boaz Myhill as the long-term successor to Jussi Jaaskelainen and are reportedly planning a £2million bid for him.
Trotters boss Owen Coyle wants tougher competition between the sticks for 35-year-old Jaaskelainen, and is hoping to exploit the Tigers' financial problems by securing a bargain deal for Myhill.
The Wales international, 28, is likely to be one of several star names leaving the KC Stadium this summer following Hull's relegation to the Championship.
The Daily Star Sunday reports that Coyle will put an opening offer of £2million on the table for shot-stopper Myhill, who is likely to jump at the chance of staying in the Premier League.

Mark Schwarzer expects to stay at Fulham next season despite speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal

Veteran Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer expects to stay at Craven Cottage next season despite speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal.
Reports have claimed Arsene Wenger could move for the 37-year-old after a string of high-profile errors from Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski last season.
But Schwarzer, currently in South Africa preparing to represent Australia at the World Cup, is unaware of any approach.
"I haven't heard anything other than what's been said or written in the papers, so it's purely speculative at the moment," he told ABC Sport.
"I've got another year left on my contract at Fulham and I've really enjoyed my time at Fulham and I'm enjoying it and I see my future at the moment with Fulham.
"I don't see anything changing unless someone tells me otherwise."

Barcelona president Joan Laporta will not pay an "exorbitant" fee for Cesc Fabregas and an offer above his market value is out of the question

Barcelona president Joan Laporta will not pay an "exorbitant" fee for Cesc Fabregas and an offer above his market value is out of the question.
The Catalan giants have made securing the midfielder's signature their top priority this summer, with the Arsenal skipper having been strongly linked with a return to his roots for some time.
The Spain international is reported to have told Gunners boss Arsene Wenger that he wants to move on, despite being contracted to the club until 2015.
The issue at present is that Arsenal are reluctant to part with their prized asset, well aware that losing their captain would represent a sizeable step backwards.
An outrageous offer could force their hand, as they could pump the funds back into the team, but they are prepared to hold firm until they get what they want.
Barca, though, have made it clear that they are not prepared to pay over the odds and will look elsewhere should the Gunners refuse to play ball.
A tentative enquiry has already been made in an effort to determine Arsenal's stance, but Laporta admits his club will not be held to ransom in their pursuit of Fabregas.
"We will not sign any players for above market value," he said.
"We are interested in signing Cesc and Arsenal know that but we will not pay an exorbitant price for any player.
"When it comes to market prices, we'll strengthen where we can but will not pay an unrealistic price"

Mourinho - I'd love to manage Rooney

JOSE MOURINHO last night risked the wrath of Alex Ferguson by admitting he would love to manage Wayne Rooney.

The Special One expects to finally take charge of Real Madrid next week after the Spanish giants reached a deal with Inter Milan to release him.
Asked which player he would love to manage, Mourinho said: "I'm going to say it because it's impossible.
"I would love to manage Wayne Rooney, as much for his talent as a player as for his mentality.
"But my friend Sir Alex Ferguson can be calm because it's impossible."
Mourinho's words are certain to upset Fergie as it is well known that Real president Florentino Perez has targeted Manchester United striker Rooney, 24.
Madrid are desperate to snap up the biggest name in English football and Mourinho has clearly sent a very public message.
Old Trafford gaffer Ferguson has already lost Cristiano Ronaldo, who went to the Bernabeu last summer for a world-record £80million fee.
Top Madrid sources have told SunSport that Perez wants Rooney and is preparing a mega-bucks bid as well as a whopping £10m-a-year salary.
Last night, Inter paved the way for Mourinho's departure after agreeing a deal with Real that will see his £13.5m penalty clause slashed in half.
The compromise was reached at a meeting in Milan between Inter president Massimo Moratti and Real's big spender Perez.

Hammers want Becks; Cole snubs return

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan has confirmed he would "love" to sign David Beckham - but says Joe Cole rejected his former club's advances.
The Hammers are still managerless, with Avram Grant expected to be confirmed as Gianfranco Zola's successor next week.
But Sullivan, who bought the club along with David Gold last season, has already been linked with names such as Thierry Henry and confirmed his desire to bring LA Galaxy star Beckham back to his native east London on loan.
"I'd love David Beckham," Sullivan told the Daily Mail. "He has massive cult status in east London and still has a house near Bishop's Stortford, not far from our training ground. He's from Chingford, which is our heartland. We are the club of east London and Essex.
"If AC Milan didn't want him in January and if he still wanted to do it, I'd love to have him. He seems a remarkable professional."
As for Cole, who began his career with the Hammers before moving to Chelsea - where he is out of contract this summer - Sullivan said: "We've asked Joe to name a price but he said no."

Alex Ferguson has 95m to spend

DAVID GILL has told Manchester United's protesting fans: Stop moaning, we've got £95million to spend.

Many of the Old Trafford faithful have become disillusioned with the debt-laden ownership of the unpopular Glazer family.
And the American family put another nail in the coffin of the takeover bid by the Red Knights consortium last night by insisting there are no plans to sell up.
But chief executive Gill insisted there is nothing to be gloomy about and claims boss Alex Ferguson will have as much of that warchest as he wants for new signings this summer.
Fergie has hinted there may only be one big-name signing with Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez already signed on for around £18m.
But with Karim Benzema and David Silva also believed to be on their radar, Gill says the extra money will be made available.
Gill said: "People say Alex is saying money is there because he has to. Anyone who knows Alex Ferguson knows he wouldn't say that if he didn't mean what he said.
"The money is definitely there. The financial results will show the figures are about £95m cash.
"We are not in a situation whereby Alex is restricted in what he wants to do with the club.
"We can invest in the players, the training ground and the stadium."
Fan protests became part and parcel of United home games last season with the Green and Gold campaign particularly prominent.
Yet Gill insisted: "The fans protesting are not going to change their opinion even if we win three Champions League titles in a row.
"We couldn't have been much more successful in the last three years.
"But they are simply never going to be happy."
United's hopes of landing Karim Benzema, however, are set to be dashed by Real Madrid for a second successive year.
Ferguson was keen to sign the French forward 12 months ago before he moved to the Bernabeu for around £30million.
And Real's sporting director Jorge Valdano has now said Benzema will be like 'a new signing' next season.
The former Lyon man hardly featured last term, sparking stories he could be on the move again.
But Valdano said: "We do not need more forwards - we scored 102 goals this season and Benzema didn't play much. Next season Karim is like a new signing."

Inter Milan confirm Capello is a candidate

Massimo Moratti is seeking a coach with Champions League experience and has confirmed current England boss Fabio Capello is in his thoughts.
The Inter Milan president is looking for a new coach amidst Mourinho's current stalemate as the Nerazzurri and the Portuguese continue to haggle over the financial terms of his release.
But Moratti has already started the process of finding a replacement and Capello is on the short-list.
Capello, who had great success at the city's other club AC Milan in the early 1990s, has already distanced himself from a return to the San Siro but that has not deterred Moratti.
When asked directly about 63-year-old Capello today, he said: "He is one of the candidates. But I have not made a decision.
"Should Mourinho leave, my duty is to find a coach that is serious and has experience, for example, in the Champions League.
"I think many coaches have a desire to collaborate with Inter."
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola and former Roma boss Luciano Spalletti, currently at Zenit St Petersburg, have also been linked by the Italian press with the Inter hotseat.
"We thought about Guardiola," added Moratti on Gazzetta TV. "But he is very much linked with Barcelona and I don't think he will move for money.
"Spalletti did very well at Roma and he has done well in Russia.
"But I think Spalletti's intentions are to stay there."

Mourinho want Ashley Cole to go to REAL!

JOSE MOURINHO last night confirmed he wants Ashley Cole at Real Madrid.

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are also on his wishlist. SunSport yesterday revealed Mourinho had targeted the Chelsea defender, convinced he will want to escape England following his bitter divorce from wife Cheryl.
Mourinho, about to be named the new Bernabeu boss, said: "I prefer to play with attacking full-backs in the style of Ashley Cole and Maicon."
The ex-Blues manager has other Premier League stars in his sights, too.
He added: "Both Gerrard and Lampard are great players who give everything.
"I like to have some players who are in their 30s and in the final part of their careers.
"These are the players that you buy and do not recover the money.
"But if they give you good performances for two or three years you still get your money's worth."
Lampard, 32 next month, spent three years with Mourinho at Chelsea and became the manager's most reliable player and closest dressing-room ally.
He had the chance to follow Mourinho to the San Siro in 2008 but chose to sign a new £150,000-a-week deal at Stamford Bridge.
Gerrard, 30, was also on the brink of signing for Mourinho in 2005 but had a last-minute change of heart and chose to stay with Liverpool.
But now, with the Merseyside club on the slide and losing millions after failing to qualify for the Champions League, the England ace could be open to Madrid's advances.
Both players would cost at least £30million but that would not deter Madrid, who spent £200m last season on Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Xabi Alonso and Karim Benzema.
And Portuguese ace Mourinho, 47, is already vowing to take Europe by storm next season.
He said: "My Madrid will always play well, attack and be winners.
"It will be a balanced team and one with its own identity, which will be set by me and my players.
"No player or coach has won the English, Italian and Spanish leagues before and I'd like to become the first person to do that.
"I'd also like to be the first coach to lift the Champions League with three different teams."

Manchester United have completed the deal to sign Javier Hernandez

Manchester United have completed the deal to sign Javier Hernandez after the Mexico striker was granted a work permit on Thursday.
United last month agreed a fee with Mexican side Guadalajara for the 22-year-old before the player also completed a medical and agreed personal terms.
United had only been awaiting confirmation of his work permit to complete his transfer, which will go through on July 1.
Hernandez's confirmation as a United player had been held up because he had played less than 75% of Mexico's internationals during the past two years.
He is, however, set to be a part of the Mexico squad at the World Cup finals in South Africa following which he is due to join United's squad for the Philadelphia leg of their pre-season tour of the United States and Canada.
Hernandez, who is nicknamed 'Chicharito', described his move to Old Trafford as "living the dream" after he completed his medical in Manchester last month.
United fans got a quick glimpse of his talents when he made a substitute appearance for Mexico against England in their 3-1 defeat at Wembley on Monday, before he scored in a 2-1 friendly loss against Holland last night.
Hernandez's signing is the first time that United have done a deal for a Mexican player.

Jose Mourinho want England duo Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard for Real

Jose Mourinho admits England duo Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are the type of players he will look to lure to Real Madrid this summer.
The Portuguese boss, who is set to be named as Madrid coach in the coming days after Manuel Pellegrini was sacked from the post last night, also outlined his preference for full-backs in the mould of Ashley Cole and Maicon.
While Mourinho is also yet to officially leave Inter Milan, he has already spoken freely about his plans at big-spending Madrid.
Those plans could involve raids on his former clubs, Chelsea and Inter, after he spoke glowingly about Blues duo Lampard, 31, and Cole, 29, as well as Maicon - the 28-year-old Brazilian who helped Mourinho lead Inter to a trophy treble in 2009/10.
Mourinho has also previously admired 29-year-old Gerrard - he attempted to sign the Liverpool midfielder while he was in charge of Chelsea - and today described all four players as ideal to fulfil his ambitions in the Spanish capital.
"I like players in the final part of their careers," Mourinho told Spanish sports daily AS.
"I love to have some players who are 33 or 34 years old... they are players that you buy and you won't recover this money, but if they give you good performances for two or three years you've got your money's worth.
"Both (Gerrard and Lampard) are great players who always give everything."
Mourinho added: "I like to play with four at the back, although my teams are always ready to play with only three - a system I have used to win many games over the years.
"But normally we will play with four, but with two offensive full-backs in the style of Maicon and Ashley Cole."
Mourinho's arrival is at the very least set to usher in the start of another long summer of transfer rumours at the Bernabeu, after their record-breaking summer spending last year that brought in big names Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.
Those signings, however, failed to deliver the Primera Division title for a second successive term - with rivals Barca again successful - while they failed even to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Mourinho is set to ride into Madrid having won Europe's top club competition, following Inter's 2-0 win over Bayern Munich last Saturday, while also boasting back-to-back Serie A successes.
The 47-year-old, however, stopped short of promising Real's fans a Primera Division title next season, although he did seek to quash concerns he will employ a more defensive style.
"I want to win the league, because no player or coach has won the English, Italian and Spanish leagues and I would like to be the first to do it, and also to be the first coach to lift three Champions Leagues with three different teams," he said.
"I would also like to discover a player from the youth team and make him into a star.
"I have a lot of motivations. I don't want to lose humility, so I cannot come out and say that I'm going to win the league when you are up against a super team like Barca."
Responding to a question about how Madrid fans want to win with style, he added: "Me as well, let them have no doubt about that.
"My Madrid will always play well, attack and will be winners. However, there will be times when we will have to face the game in a different manner.
"Having said that, my team always goes out on the pitch with a clear idea: to win. And if we are winning 3-1 and we only have 10 players on the pitch, then my players will have to sit back to defend. That's the way it is.
"It's very difficult during 90 minutes to always be better than your opponent. There's always a time in which you need to be a team and make sacrifices."
He added: "It will be a balanced team. A team that plays to win titles must be aware aware of its virtues and its defects and has to work as a unit.
"A team that wants to win titles has to win games and a team that wants to win games has to play well.
"We will be a side with its own identity. We will not imitate anybody. The identity will be set by the players and me.
"For this we will have to work very hard."

Valencia won't sell David Silva

MANCHESTER UNITED and Real Madrid have been told David Silva is not for sale.

The Valencia midfielder, 24, has been linked with a £30million move. But president Manuel Llorente insisted: "He will not leave."

Torres will stay put at Liverpool

FERNANDO TORRES will stay at Liverpool.

The Kop striker's agent, Jose Antonio Peton, last night insisted: "For the moment I can assure fans that Fernando will continue at Liverpool next season."
And that is bad news for Manchester City and Chelsea who would both love to have the Spanish World Cup star on their books.
Peton added: "Everything is down to Liverpool's attitude but, for the time being, Fernando is happy at the club and has a good contract.
"Liverpool have not spoken to us about his future, so he is just concentrating on playing at the World Cup."
Torres, 26, is still battling to make Spain's World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 16 after a season dogged by hernia, hamstring and knee problems.
He has not played since April when a second bout of knee surgery left him in a race to be fit in time for South Africa.
And, last night, Torres conceded how the pressure of coping with expectancy on top of his injuries turned last season into a horror show at Anfield.
He revealed: "It's been very difficult. When you start out, you hope you can win titles and not have injuries.
"Instead it has been just the opposite. But in football there is always tomorrow.
"So I have put aside the club and the bad season, and I want to finish in the best way possible by making history with my country at the World Cup.
"I am happy with the progress of my injury and, God willing, I'll be 100 per cent for our first game of the World Cup."
One man definitely leaving Liverpool, though, is left-back Fabio Aurelio, 30, who rejected a pay-as-you-play deal after a season decimated by injuries.
Aurelio's contract runs out on Tuesday and he will go with a glowing reference from boss Rafa Benitez.
The Liverpool chief, who signed Aurelio from Valencia four years ago, said: "We had been trying to work something out with regards an extension and it was a pity we couldn't.
"He has given us absolutely fantastic service. Fabio is a top professional, a great player and a really good lad."

Jack Rodwell admits he will stay at Everton

Midfielder Jack Rodwell admits he was flattered by reported interest from Manchester United but never had any intention of leaving Everton.
The 19-year-old has signed a new five-year contract, only 15 months after agreeing his first major deal with the Toffees.
That will keep him out of the clutches of a number of top Premier League clubs who were casting admiring glances at the teenager.
But Rodwell, who has been at Everton since he was seven, has always been happy at Goodison Park and intends to repay the club's faith in him.
"It is a brilliant day for me. I've been at this club a long time and to sign a new five-year deal is amazing," said the teenager, who had a trial with Liverpool aged six only to be told to come back in a year's time.
"I went on a trial at Liverpool when I was six and they asked me to come back a year later but Everton came knocking and I haven't looked back.
"I've been with Everton since I was seven and at that age you don't really think about the first team.
"It is only about 16 when you think you start to realise you might have a shot. To play for them is an honour, to get this contract is even better.
"I have been happy at this club ever since so when I got offered a five-year contract I was delighted to sign.
"It is flattering, obviously, because to be linked with clubs like United is an honour but I'm perfectly happy to be here and it is a great club.
"I've kept calm and just focused on my football day to day. I trained hard and played hard and knew everything would take care of itself.
"I've not had major discussions over it (the new contract), it has not been an issue. I've just got my head down and played my football."
Rodwell made his full Everton debut as a substitute against AZ Alkmaar at the age of just 16 years and 284 days in December 2007 to become the youngest Everton player to play in Europe, although his record was subsequently beaten by Jake Bidwell last December.
His Barclays Premier League bow came in March 2008 when he made a substitute appearance at Sunderland and since then he has developed into a first-team regular.
By manager David Moyes' own admission he was forced to play Rodwell more than he wanted to at the start of this season because of crippling injury problems.
But that had an impact on the youngster as he then became injured and could not get back into the side.
Having signed his new contract Rodwell is determined to force his way into the starting line-up for next season and become established in the first team.
"I've always had the belief in myself," added the England Under-21 international.
"I'm not surprised [by my progression]. I've done well and although I wouldn't want to put too much pressure on myself there is a lot more to come.
"I'm my own player and would like to build my own game naturally as it comes within the next few years as I've got my own style.
"The main thing now is for me to become a regular and things like goals and assists will be a bonus."
While Rodwell has followed the example set by midfielder Tim Cahill and fellow youngster Seamus Coleman in signing long-term deals the future of Steven Pienaar seems less sure.
The South Africa midfielder has a year left on his contract and is holding out for a better offer from the club before deciding on his next course of action.
Pienaar has said he has been disappointed not to have heard from Everton since he rejected their latest offer a fortnight ago.
However, Everton have pointed out Pienaar is about to play in a World Cup in his home country and so further discussions are not likely to take place now until mid-July when the tournament has finished.

Maradona: Messi's better than me

Diego Maradona may have inspired Argentina to World Cup success in 1986 but he feels Lionel Messi is capable of even greater feats, and has challenged the reigning World Player of the Year to become a leader for his country in South Africa.
The debate over whether Lionel Messi will usurp his international coach and become perhaps the greatest player in history has intensified thanks to the forward's exploits this season, with his 47 goals in all competitions for Barcelona serving notice of his excellence.
Messi may have been criticised for failing to replicate his club form with Argentina, but Maradona expects great things from his young protégé and has urged him to inspire the players around him when then World Cup finals begin.
Maradona did the same when he wowed the world 24 years ago in Mexico, and feels Messi is at an even higher level at present.
"Messi is better than me at World Cup '86," Maradona told Sport. "He's the best player in the world and better by far compared to others.
"In 86, in Mexico, I did it with the ball, I grew up and my team-mates followed. Now I have explained the same to Leo to do it in South Africa and he has understood.
"It is fortunate that Leo was born in Argentina and I can train him. Whoever does not want to understand that, that it is their problem.
"Messi is well aware that colleagues expect him to be the icing on the cake. He has to be the leader with the ball. We need him to lead by example in the squad and on the pitch.
"He has to be the leader of the ball. When we play football and the ball does not pass through Messi, then ball goes through me but I cannot move so then we are going wrong."

England win 3-1 over Mexico

England were second best for much of the game, but came away from Wembley with a 3-1 win over Mexico in their friendly.
Goals from Ledley King, Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson sealed victory for Fabio Capello's side with Mexico's sole reply coming from Guillermo Franco. But Capello will be wary of the need for his side to tighten up defensively with Robert Green twice denying Carlos Vela while Carlos Salcido struck a post.
The Cape Verde Islands provided one of the shocks of the year as they held Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal to a 0-0 draw. The result adds weight to the claims of many for coach Carlos Queiroz to get the sack, and does not bode well for Portugal's 'Group of Death' campaign when they come up against Brazil, Ivory Coast and North Korea this summer.
Queiroz selected a full-strength starting line-up with the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, Miguel Veloso, Nani, Deco, Liedson and Ronaldo all named.
The hosts predictably dominated the encounter at the Complexo Desportivo in Covilha but lacked a cutting edge with Real Madrid forward Ronaldo in particular guilty of a string of misses.
Argentina said goodbye to their home fans before their World Cup trip with a 5-0 win over Canada.
Maxi Rodriguez got an early double to aid Argentina's win with a convincing performance despite their rivals' obvious weakness. Eight minutes before half-time, Angel Di Maria widened the gap from outside the box with the left foot as his shot went in off the left post.
In the 62nd minute, after a defensive mistake by Andre Hainault, Gonzalo Higuain assisted Carlos Tevez to beat keeper Pat Onstad. Sergio Aguero replaced Tevez in the 70th minute and the Atletico Madrid forward only needed a few seconds to evade Richard Hastings and make it 5-0.
World Cup hosts South Africa continued their build-up to the big event with a promising, yet ultimately disappointing 1-1 draw with Bulgaria in Johannesburg.
Siyabonga Sangweni gave Bafana Bafana the lead just before the midway point of a first half they dominated but Valeri Bojinov's 31st-minute strike pegged the home side back.
Earlier in the day, substitute Brett Holman struck with the last kick of the game to give Australia an undeserved 2-1 victory against New Zealand at the MCG.
New Zealand had gone ahead thanks to Chris Killen's close-range strike after 16 minutes and they should have also had a man advantage at the break after a horror challenge by Vince Grella on Leo Bertos was met with only a yellow card. It took a debut goal from young midfielder Dario Vidosic to bring Australia level after 57 minutes before Holman clinched the win late on.
Japan's final game on home soil prior to the World Cup finals ended in a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the hands of South Korea.
Takeshi Okada's side fly to Europe and their Alpine training camp on Wednesday but were unable to generate any momentum at Saitama Stadium. Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung scored with a fine effort from the edge of the penalty area after six minutes and Monaco forward Park Chu-young added a second with a late spot-kick.

Maicon interested in joining Mourinho at Real Madrid

MInter Milan defender Maicon is happy to stay at European champions but has admitted he would be interested in following Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid if the coach wants him. Brazilian star Maicon has been an integral part of Inter's success this season. Mourinho appears certain to take charge at the Bernabeu after leading Inter to European glory there on Saturday, and Maicon, 28, is known to be a favourite of the Portuguese.
"To leave Inter?,'' Maicon said. "I have a contract and I want to respect it. "If he (Mourinho) wants me at Real, then we would have to see if (Inter president Massimo) Moratti agrees.''
For now, Maicon is celebrating after Inter clinched a treble-winning season with last night's 2-0 win over Bayern Munich.
"We have made history,'' he said."This is a great thing for us, it's wonderful. "Many congratulations and thanks to Mourinho who's a great man and coach.''

JOSE MOURINHO'S confirmed move to Real Madrid but has caused panic at the top Premier League clubs

JOSE MOURINHO'S move to Real Madrid has caused panic at the top Premier League clubs.

Chelsea's Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are in his sights, along with Liverpool stars Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.
Mourinho, who led Inter Milan to Champions League glory on Saturday night, will be handed a £100million kitty to make Real the kings of Europe.
He will sign a four-year deal with the Spanish giants worth £8m a year, plus hefty bonuses for winning La Liga and the Champions League.
The former Chelsea boss also has close links with Michael Essien and keeper Petr Cech from the club he left in 2007.
And Liverpool will be quaking. The Special One twice tried to sign Kop skipper Gerrard when he was at Chelsea, although luring Torres back to Spain might prove difficult as he remains such a hero at Real's rivals Atletico.
Mourinho is a huge admirer of Manchester United hitman Wayne Rooney, while Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Manchester City forward Emmanuel Adebayor are also potential targets.
Diego Milito, Inter's two-goal Champions League final hero against Bayern Munich, could follow Mourinho to Madrid, along with play-maker Wesley Sneijder and keeper Julio Cesar.

Billionaire Nigerian tycoon is planning to enter the race to snap up a 16% stake in Arsenal

A billionaire Nigerian tycoon is planning to enter the race to snap up a 16% stake in Arsenal, according to a report on Sunday.
Aliko Dangote - one of Africa's richest men - is said to have registered his interest in the shareholding being sold by the club's fourth largest investor Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith, according to The Sunday Times.
The move could spark a takeover battle for the Gunners, with other contenders including its two biggest current investors - who would be forced to launch a full takeover bid for the club if they secured the stake.
Mr Dangote is reportedly a passionate football fan and has the wealth to go head-to-head with the two big Arsenal investors, American sports entrepreneur Stan Kroenke and Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov.
The Nigerian industrialist has stood for the role of president of the Nigerian football association and is believed to have donated cash to the Nigerian national football team.
Mr Dangote founded manufacturing empire Dangote Group and was formerly head of the Nigerian stock exchange.
Finance house Blackstone is now thought to have placed him on the shortlist to buy the Arsenal stake.
Lady Bracewell-Smith is said to be seeking £160million for her stake after putting it on the sale block earlier this year.

West Ham have made a bid to sign Thierry Henry AND become highest-paid player in their history

West Ham have made a bid to sign Thierry Henry in a move which would see the Frenchman become the highest-paid player in their history.
The former Arsenal striker has been linked with a move away from Barcelona with reports indicating Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls would be a possible destination.
However, West Ham joint chairman David Sullivan has revealed he wants to sign the 32-year-old and it is reported he is willing to offer him a two-year deal worth around £75,000 a week, more than £7.5million in total.
Sullivan told The Sun: "We're trying to assemble a more prolific strike force at West Ham and I'd love to have Henry here.
"Our club is in debt but a striker of his quality and standing would make it a great deal.
"Henry is still up there with the best.
"I've made an offer which would make him the highest-paid player in the club's history.
"And it's a serious offer because Henry could walk into almost any Premier League side."

Chamakh confirmed as Arsenal PLAYER

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Morocco international striker Marouane Chamakh on a free transfer from Bordeaux.
The 26-year-old has reportedly agreed a five-year deal on wages of around £50,000-a-week.
The Gunners' recruitment of long-term target Chamakh marks the beginning of what could be a busy summer of transfer activity for the club.
Manager Arsene Wenger has backed him to be "a great addition" to the Arsenal squad.
Chamakh, who will wear shirt number 29 at the Emirates Stadium, has made no secret of his ambition to move to the Premier League and said: "This is a dream come true and a great joy to be joining Arsenal.
"My goal was always to play in the Premier League and Arsenal was the choice of my heart."
Chamakh played a key role in Bordeaux winning the French league title in 2009 and leaves the club after 293 appearances, during which he has scored 79 times.
He first appeared for Bordeaux as a teenager and has gradually built a reputation as one of the finest strikers in Ligue 1, helping his club reach the Champions League quarter-finals where they lost to French rivals Lyon.
Wenger has been looking to strengthen his options in attack, and said on the club's official website: "We are delighted that Marouane Chamakh has joined us.
"He is a player we have admired for some time now and I know he will provide our squad with great quality.
"Chamakh has proved he is a great player with his performances for Bordeaux and Morocco in recent seasons and we're all looking forward to him joining us.
"Chamakh is a striker of real quality and has all the attributes suited to come to England and do very well.
"He is also a fighter, not only a good football player, but a fighter as well. He is very good in the air and also a good team player. He is a great addition to our squad."
Chamakh has scored 27 goals in 53 appearances for Morocco and now believes he can be a hit in the Premier League.
"Without any hesitation, Arsenal was my preferred club," he said.
"The team and history of Arsenal, they make me dream. My goal was to join Arsenal out of all the English clubs because it is a club that makes me dream and I have been a fan since I was a child.
"I'm very excited about playing at Emirates Stadium in front of the Arsenal supporters. I have heard many great things about the stadium and I cannot wait to be playing there in an Arsenal shirt.
"I will give my best to this club, the club that I used to support. We have many great players at Arsenal and I will be giving everything to help the team win trophies next season."
Arsenal were in title contention until the closing weeks of last season, but their bid faltered and Manchester United and eventual league champions Chelsea pulled away.
Wenger is expected to make several additions to his squad this summer in an effort to keep up with the established leading two teams and step up the challenge for the club's first silverware since 2005.
Everton's Mikel Arteta and Brazil playmaker Felipe Melo, of Juventus, have been linked, while a shock move for out-of-contract Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has also been touted.
Any moves may depend on whether captain Cesc Fabregas, recovering from a cracked fibula ahead of the World Cup, stays on.
Cover at centre-back is also expected, with Neven Subotic, of Borussia Dortmund, Bolton's Gary Cahill and Senegal international Pape Diakhate all reported targets.
Veteran Sol Campbell should be offered another year, but William Gallas and Mikael Silvestre will probably leave.
Chairman Peter Hill-Wood today vowed Arsenal will do all they can to prevent Fabregas joining Barcelona.
Arsenal maintain that they are not interested in negotiating a fee, even though Fabregas has told them he wants to return to the club where he began his career.
"The message has been given to them we don't want to lose him and will do our damnedest to keep him," Hill-Wood told Goal.com.
"We haven't had an official approach from them and have made it perfectly clear we don't want to lose him."
Barcelona have already recruited Spain striker David Villa from Valencia for £34million, a deal which went through on Friday, and would love Fabregas, 23, to become their next big recruit.
Discussing Barcelona's open pursuit, Hill-Wood said: "It's a funny way of doing business.
"I don't know if he will stay. I've really got little to say but we very much hope he stays with us and we're confident he will."

David Villa has completed his £35million move from Valencia to Barcelona

Spain striker David Villa has completed his £35million move from Valencia to Barcelona after signing a four-year contract at the Nou Camp.
Villa comfortably passed a medical on Friday morning and has now put pen to paper on a deal which will keep him at Barcelona until 2014, with an option for an additional 12 months.
Debt-ridden Valencia are believed to have received €40million (£35m) for Villa, who is also now secured at Barcelona by a buyout clause of €200m (£174m).
A statement on Barcelona's official website read: "David Villa is now officially the first signing for 2010/11.
"He signed the contract that will keep him at the club for the next four seasons with an option for another."
Villa's arrival casts doubt over the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Barcelona are now expected to focus their attention on Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.
Villa, top scorer in Spain's triumphant Euro 2008 campaign, is now relishing the challenge that lies ahead.
"I'm very happy and proud to be here," he told Barca's website. "Anybody would be happy to come to a club like this - as everybody says, this is the best team in the world."
Villa scored 107 goals in 166 league matches for Valencia after establishing himself with Real Zaragoza, and is hoping goals will continue to fly in his new club.
"It's always hard to score goals, but when you have players like Xavi, (Lionel) Messi, (Sergio) Busquets, (Seydou) Keita or Pedro (Rodriguez) around you, it's bound to be a little easier for a striker," he said.
Asked what he will bring to the team, Villa replied: "Hard work, humility and a desire to try to help the team be a little better. I'm really keen to get started here."
The move brings to an end a successful five-year stint with Los Che which has seen the player develop into one of the most feared forwards in Europe and become a regular in the Spain team.
He admitted on Wednesday, however, that he would be leaving the Mestalla with a heavy heart.
"I get a lot of feelings, leaving many friends, but knowing that it is good for the club," he said in an open letter.
"At Valencia I have grown as a player and as a person. At Valencia I have felt at home from day one and nobody will doubt it to be that way forever.
"I want everyone to know that it has been a great source of pride for me to wear this shirt. It has given me so much and I will always carry it in my heart."
Villa helped Valencia win the 2008 Copa del Rey and moves on having fired the club to a third-place finish in La Liga in 2009/10 to return the club to the Champions League.
"I leave with the satisfaction that the club has returned to where it deserves to be every year - fighting among the best in Europe in the Champions League," he added.

Manchester United have no intention of selling Dimitar Berbatov this summer

Sir Alex Ferguson insists Manchester United have no intention of selling Dimitar Berbatov this summer.
The Bulgarian striker has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford following his £30.75million move from Tottenham in August 2008, scoring just 26 goals in two seasons.
But Ferguson has no plans to offload the "fantastic" 29-year-old.
"No, no, definitely not," he said.
"That's a problem with a club like United - there's expectation and the media attention is always there.
"There's speculation every year - some summers I'm signing 100 players. You've got to live with that sort of media hype about the club. There's been a bit about Berbatov in terms of his future but we know he's a good player.
"He's a fantastic footballer and he'll be with us next year."
Berbatov will, therefore, be part of the Red Devils' squad which tours Canada and the United States in July.
United's eight World Cup stars will be given a break after their exploits in South Africa. They will not travel to North America and Ferguson has indicated they could miss the start of the new Premier League season.
Speaking to Toronto radio station FAN 590, he said: "The players who will be going on the tour, the big names, the established names from Manchester United over the last 20 years - (Paul) Scholes, (Gary) Neville, (Ryan) Giggs - will all be there, (Edwin) Van der Sar, Berbatov, (Darren) Fletcher, (John) O'Shea... all these players. We're bringing a very strong squad.
"My intention anyway is to start the season with the squad I'm bringing on tour because the World Cup can be a draining experience for players - it's the biggest tournament of their lives. They need rest.
"We'll give all the players a 28-day rest after their last game so we intend to start the season without them."
Ferguson also praised the Glazer family, who own the club, for the constant support despite much criticism.
"They've been great owners," he said. "They have supported me every way I've asked them.
"There's no other reason to think they haven't supported me. If you look at any time I've wanted a player they've provided the money; if you look at what we've done this season - and people don't recognise this - we've spent over £20million on young players.
"We've bought Chris Smalling, Mame Diouf and Javier Hernandez.
"People don't realise how we're structured and how we see our future of the club. We've always based it on a nucleus and foundation of young players developing in the club."
The demand for instant success, though, and the "greed" of foreign owners makes Ferguson believe a salary cap will not be introduced in football any time soon.
"I don't think so," he said. "This has been talked about for many, many years. There must be concern about the level of salaries in the game.
"But, football is worldwide game and there's a lot of greed, particularly with the types of owners that come into the game - Russians, Americans, Middle-East owners.
"Salary caps will not come into their domain in the sense of the wealth they have and what they can do with that wealth.
"They can attract the best players through that wealth and I just don't see that salary caps come into their area of thinking."
Meanwhile, Ferguson is backing old friend Jose Mourinho to guide Inter Milan to victory in tomorrow's Champions League final against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu.
He still has a feeling of regret, though, that Inter find themselves up against Bayern rather than his United side.
"We should have been in that final," he said, before recalling his team's quarter-final exit to the Bavarians and in particular the dismissal of Rafael da Silva.
"We murdered Bayern Munich and just didn't have the luck on the night and had a terrible refereeing decision against us in the game that changed the whole course of it.
"If you look at Bayern in all the games this season, they have carried a bit of luck. Maybe their name's on the cup.
"But, make no mistake - Inter are the better team. Inter are a very, very good team. Mourinho has changed that whole club around.
"I think they are the best team. They can win it but Bayern are carrying luck and you just worry about th

CHELSEA will fight Manchester City for James Milner

CHELSEA will fight Manchester City for England midfield star James Milner.

City have tabled a £30million offer after Aston Villa rejected their initial £25m bid.
But now Chelsea have joined the race and Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti believes the lure of Champions League football will prove a trump card.

ASTON VILLA want Eidur Gudjohnsen

ASTON VILLA are eyeing up Icelandic international Eidur Gudjohnsen.

The on-loan Monaco striker only scored twice but impressed with his link-up play to help Spurs reach the Champions League.
The ex-Chelsea ace is keen to stay in the Premier League but Spurs have not moved to keep him for next season.
And O'Neill could now swoop to bring him to Villa Park on a season-long loan.
Gudjohnsen, 31, failed to find the net with Monaco before moving on and previously netted only 10 goals in 72 appearances for Barcelona.
But O'Neill is mindful that his best spells came in the Premier League, where he almost averaged a goal every three games in 237 appearances for Bolton and Chelsea. Gudjohnsen's arrival at Villa Park could mean the departure of England striker Emikle Heskey.
Stoke are ready to move for the out-of-favour Heskey with James Beattie heading out.
Heskey has been a regular on the Villa bench recently behind John Carew, But the big Three Lions striker could fit the bill at Stoke, who are thought to have had a bid for West Ham's Carlton Cole rejected.
Villa boss Martin O'Neill put six players up for sale last week and although Heskey was not among them, the former Liverpool player's future is uncertain.
Heskey may be part of Fabio Capello's plans but he only netted five times for Villa last season after his £3.5million move from Wigan 18 months ago.
Beattie could move to West Brom while fellow Potters hitman Dave Kitson may interest Wolves.

Avram Grant has resigned as Portsmouth manager and expected to be West Ham Manager

Avram Grant has resigned as Portsmouth manager after "a lot of searching" and is widely expected to take the managerial reins at West Ham.
The Israeli won widespread praise for the way he led the club amid financial turmoil which resulted in administration, but was unable to save them from relegation from the Premier League.
He did, though, guide Pompey to an FA Cup final appearance. That game proved to be Grant's last in charge, and he is now expected to be appointed as Gianfranco Zola's successor at Upton Park.
The Italian parted company with the Hammers last week.
Grant explained his decision to resign in an emotional open letter to fans on the club's official website.
"This was one of the most difficult decisions I've had to take in my football career. After a lot of soul searching and under the circumstances I'm taking a different direction," Grant said.
"It's been both a difficult and complex year for us at the club, but at the same time, it's been a wonderful and uplifting professional and personal experience.
"I have been inundated with letters and emails from fans. Many have brought tears to my eyes and take it from me; it takes a lot to do that. I will never forget you, the loyal fans of Pompey who, without a doubt, helped me protect the team under such complex circumstances.
"There are very few teams in the world that have fans as passionate and devoted as you are. Seeing you all so proud with your heads held up high is the best reward I can receive.
"It has been a great experience to be part of one of the most wonderful occurrences that has happened in the history of British football and also shows that even in the most desperate times, loyalty, devotion, professionalism and passion can be demonstrated. I wish you all the possible success which you genuinely deserve."
Grant took over at Fratton Park from Paul Hart in November.
His time in the hotseat, though, was beset by off-field problems as the full scale of their financial trouble began to emerge. The club went into administration in February and the following month were deducted nine points by the Premier League which all but condemned them to relegation.
Grant, whose side finished the season bottom of the table with 19 points, still managed to lead them to the FA Cup final, though. They went down 1-0 to his former side Chelsea at Wembley last weekend, having claimed a shock last-four success over Tottenham.
The Israeli's statement continued: "Portsmouth has given me a feeling of home away from home.
"I might be leaving Portsmouth physically, but you cannot take Portsmouth away from me and my heart.
"I have informed Andrew (Andronikou) the administrator that if and when the need arises, I will be at his disposal to assist in any way I possibly can.
"At this point I would like to mention the good job the administrator is doing, under very difficult circumstances after he received the club from Mr Chernoi and Mr Levy which they had saved from liquidation. Thank you for that.
"I can never fully repay the faith and backing I got from the fans, players and staff who gave 100%. I truly thank you all for granting me the opportunity and the privilege to be part of your special city and unique club."
Portsmouth's former chief executive Peter Storrie praised the work Grant did during a tough time at Fratton Park, and claimed his next club would be getting an accomplished manager.
"He came to Portsmouth, fell in love with the club and did a magnificent job," Storrie, who stepped down in March, told Sky Sports News.
"He's very easy going, very laid back, but he's got this ability to inspire players and put his arms around them. He explains the game in detail to them.
"What he did get was a tremendous team spirit among everybody.
"He gave absolutely everything, he gelled all the players together, got them playing as a unit. He couldn't have done anything more.
"This will be a very difficult decision for him. He loves the club and the fans he'll have thought long and hard about this.
"Wherever he goes I'm sure he'll be a success. I'm sure he'll want to stay in the Premier League but I'm sure he'll have offers from all around the world."

Kevin Keegan: Rooney key to lifting World Cup

Kevin Keegan believes England will have "no chance" of winning the World Cup if Wayne Rooney struggles with injury during the tournament.
The former England manager insists Rooney is the one player in Fabio Capello's squad who is indispensable ahead of the finals in South Africa.
The Manchester United star was hampered by a groin injury at the end of the Premier League campaign.
Keegan told Bloomberg Television: "England could lose any of the other players and, whilst it would be a blow, it wouldn't be a fatal blow.
"But, if England lost Rooney, I would say they have no chance then because he's the one player who can sprinkle some stardust on the team.
"Everyone will have their key player. Ours is Rooney and, if he performs well and plays to his very best, then I think England can get to the semi-finals."
Keegan, who managed England at Euro 2000, is full of praise for Capello but knows from experience that he will be under pressure if skipper Rio Ferdinand and his players fail to live up to their potential.
He said: "You can be the nicest guy in the world, you can be the best coach in the world but if you don't get results you are not going to keep your job.
"Capello has had a very, very good start....but if they (England) have a poor World Cup, then the pressure will come straight back."
Keegan is tipping Argentina as dark horses to win the tournament.
He said: "They've under-performed under Diego Maradona so far. But they have the players and, if they can get it together for six, seven matches, they have the players to win a World Cup."
