City defeat to Lech Poznan 3-1

Two late goals from Lech Poznan condemned faltering Manchester City to a 3-1 defeat to increase the pressure on boss Roberto Mancini.
With the scores locked at 1-1 following efforts from Dimitrije Injac and Emmanuel Adebayor, City's Europa League Group A rivals struck twice in the last five minutes to take the points in Poznan.
Dedryck Boyata headed against the unwitting Manuel Arboleda to make it 2-1 before Mateusz Mozdzen hit a screamer from the edge of the area to seal it in style.
It was Jose Maria Bakero's first match in charge of the Polish side following his appointment on the eve of the game and he immediately followed in the footsteps of Arsene Wenger and Mick McCarthy in outwitting the troubled Mancini.
With both Yaya and Kolo Toure left in Manchester and Carlos Tevez on his way back from Argentina, Mancini was forced to make changes.
He embraced the idea, using the match to give the likes of Shay Given, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge and Joleon Lescott game time.
City's first chance came after four minutes, Adam Johnson surging into the Poznan area before the ball broke for James Milner to poke unsuccessfully at goal.
Lescott netted from an eighth-minute corner but was unsurprised to see the effort chalked off for offside.
Sergei Krivets wasted a chance to create something for Poznan, receiving the ball in space on the left before turning into trouble and delivering a poor cross.
Good work from Artjoms Rudnevs and the lively Semir Stilic almost opened City up after quarter of an hour, but the final pass was just too heavy.
Mancini's side should have been ahead two minutes later, Patrick Vieira first missing from a tight angle then Adebayor seeing his close-range header nodded back off the line by Bartosz Bosacki.
Seconds later Boyata spurned an even better chance, heading tamely into the ground from a couple of yards.
Poznan used the let-off as a spur to up their game.
First Slawomir Peszko sent a free-kick skidding past the post before Stilic bent a first-time effort narrowly wide from the edge of the box.
By half an hour the Poles had a deserved lead. Vieira lost possession to Ivan Djurdjevic deep in the Poznan half, with the ball eventually finding Krivets on the left flank.
His cross was average but two ineffective defensive headers saw the ball fall to Injac, who lashed a low volley into the bottom corner from 25 yards.
Meanwhile, both Bridge and Micah Richards earned bookings before the break as frustration took its toll.
Wright-Phillips paid the price for a poor 45 minutes and was replaced by David Silva at the interval.
The Spain forward took up the space behind Adebayor, with Milner moving to the wing.
It was Milner's corner that created the equaliser after 50 minutes, Adebayor rising above his man to head powerfully at goal.
Jasmin Buric pulled off a fine reaction save but was unfortunate to see his parry bounce to the Togolese striker, who belted home enthusiastically.
Poznan were visibly deflated by the goal but picked themselves up enough to give Marcin Kikut a half chance, though Pablo Zabaleta was on hand with a saving tackle.
In Stilic they also had the game's liveliest player and he created another chance just after the hour mark, laying off for Rudnevs, who drew a smart save from Given at the near post.
Silva came close with 20 minutes left, Adebayor chipping back into the box from the byline and the Spaniard volleying into the turf, only for the ball to loop up and force Buric into action.
Aleksandar Kolarov came on for City, his first appearance since injuring his ankle on his debut in August, but it was not to be a happy return. With five minutes left on the clock a hopeful ball into the away area was met by Boyata, but he only succeeded in heading the ball back off Arboleda.
The defender knew little about it but with Given stranded the ball nestled in the far corner.
Mozdzen, a substitute, scored a goal more fitting of the result in the final minute when he profited on Vincent Kompany's error to beat Given with a rocket from outside the area.

Gerrard hatrick!!!

Steven Gerrard came to Liverpool's rescue once again as his late hat-trick inspired the Reds to a 3-1 Europa League victory over Napoli.
The Reds were deservedly behind to Ezequiel Lavezzi's goal after a dire first-half performance but the England midfielder's introduction at the interval changed the dynamic.
Gerrard, as he always has, led from the front and scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to extend Liverpool's lead at the top of Group K.
It also made it two wins and two draws in the last four matches and ensured the side's mini-revival did not come crashing to an end before it had chance to gather momentum.
That Gerrard made such a difference highlighted the deficiencies on the playing staff at Anfield, with the side operating the vast majority of the second half with five central midfielders in a variety of other positions.
The captain put the rest of his team-mates to shame.
Newly-appointed director of football strategy Damien Comolli, watching alongside owner John Henry, must be wondering how he is expected to bring in talent to match that of Gerrard's, such was the midfielder's influence on the game.
But both Henry and Comolli would have been disappointed with how quickly Liverpool were put on the back foot by the lively visitors in the first half.
Equally worrying was the number of times they gave the ball away, a failing which ultimately cost them as one such occasion led to Napoli's goal.
Lavezzi looked dangerous from the start and his shot forced a corner off Paul Konchesky, with his next intervention releasing Edinson Cavani through the inside-left channel only for the Uruguayan to blaze over.
The provider was slightly closer himself when he seized on a misplaced pass by Jonjo Shelvey to run at the Liverpool defence and fire a shot just wide of Jose Reina's left-hand post.
Pressure was starting to build and Glen Johnson, returning from a thigh injury after a four-match absence, was the first player to be booked for hacking at the back of Cavani's legs before the Reds cracked in the 28th minute.
Christian Poulsen's aimless back-header in the centre circle was picked up by Cavani on the left and he slipped a pass through to Lavezzi who calmly steered the ball under Reina, sparking wild celebrations for the visiting fans - many of whom had managed to acquire tickets in a corner of the main stand.
The response was for David Ngog to stab wide from Poulsen's pass and Johnson to force a regulation save out of Morgan de Sanctis.
But manager Roy Hodgson had already seen enough and sent Gerrard out to warm-up 10 minutes before the interval, with the captain reappearing for the second half at the expense of Milan Jovanovic.
It took just 11 seconds for Gerrard to get into the game, winning a tackle with typical aggression before moments later inducing a foul from Andrea Dossena which earned the former Liverpool defender a booking.
The England midfielder's presence had certainly had the desired effect, even if it did mean the side now had even less width with five central midfielders on the field.
Ngog and Shelvey wasted chances before Meireles missed the target from eight yards after latching on to Ngog's loose pass.
Gerrard curled a free-kick just wide from the edge of the penalty area but it was his sheer determination which brought the equaliser in the 75th minute.
Shelvey's run appeared to be petering out when Dossena did his former club - where he endured a miserable time - a huge favour by diverting the ball towards De Sanctis.
Gerrard sensed an opportunity and charged in with his lunge enough to divert the ball past the goalkeeper.
Salvatore Aronica's 88th-minute trip on Johnson presented the captain with a penalty to double his tally and he duly obliged.
In the directors' box Henry punched the air but he had barely sat down before Gerrard completed his hat-trick and sealed the victory, cleverly dinking the ball over De Sanctis from substitute Lucas Leiva's through-ball.

Barca and Real want Gareth Bale 50mil but Bale insisted: I'm going nowhere!!

THE world's top clubs are queuing up for Gareth Bale - but the Spurs wonderkid last night insisted: I'm staying put.

Bale's blistering display against Inter Milan stunned the football world with Real Madrid and Barcelona already talking about £50million bids.
But the 21-year-old said: "I am very happy at Tottenham and don't see the need to move anywhere else.

"There are lots of players on long-term deals at the club and that makes for stability within the squad.
"Tottenham have shown against Inter they can compete on the biggest stage with the best teams so why would anyone want to leave?
"There is a terrific group of players at White Hart Lane, the feeling with the squad is amazing and we've certainly made everyone in Europe sit up and take notice of us now."
There is little doubt, however, that Bale has now proved he can play at the highest level - and the pressure will be on Spurs to make sure they qualify every year for the Champions League.
Boss Harry Redknapp claims Bale, who signed a new four-year deal earlier this year, will not leave at any price.
He insisted: "If you are building a team then you need to hang on to players like Gareth Bale. He is not for sale.
"There is no price to put on him because the chairman Daniel Levy has already said Tottenham are not looking to sell their best players."

Nani and Darren Fletcher out this Saturday!

Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled Nani and Darren Fletcher out of Saturday's Premier League encounter with Wolves.
The pair both picked up injuries during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Bursaspor in Turkey.
And whilst it is hoped the damage is not too serious, it is enough to keep two of Ferguson's most important players out of a key domestic encounter.
"Unfortunately, Nani has a groin injury and is out for Saturday," confirmed Ferguson.
"I think Darren will be out as well, so that part has been disappointing.
"It is disappointing but these things happen in football. We may have Darron Gibson back after a bout of flu but Anderson has had a virus as well and I don't think he will be ready."
Should Ferguson only be without two of his main men on Saturday, he will not regard it as too much of a price to pay.
However, with Manchester City to face at Eastlands next Wednesday, absences for any greater length of time would cause the Red Devils a huge problem.
Not that Ferguson has much to complain about this evening given Nani's fellow wingers, Gabriel Obertan and Bebe both found the net after Fletcher had broken the deadlock with a well-struck shot early in the second-half of his 50th Champions League appearance.
"Gabriel has been derailed quite a bit by injury," said Ferguson, of Obertan, who was scoring his first goal for the club.
"It has been a problem for the lad. He had two or three last season and then picked up another in Texas this pre-season that kept him out for five or six weeks.
"But he is back now and as he showed tonight, he has fantastic talent."
As for Bebe, signed from Vitoria Guimaraes in the summer even though he had never played a competitive game for the club and Ferguson had not seen him in action, the Scot is convinced there is untapped potential to be fulfilled.
"He is a good, young player who still has a lot to learn," he said.
"He still needs a lot of coaching but the raw talent is there. He is brave and quick, and for such a young player he is a good decision maker.
"The chances of him being able to realise his potential are very good."
United now require just a point from their trip to Rangers in three weeks to cement a place in the knockout phase.
For Bursaspor, it was another harsh lesson about European life.
The Turkish champions are still without a point after four games, leaving coach Ertugrul Saglam to reflect on the injustice of it all.
"The game could have been totally different if they hadn't scored so early in the second-half," he said.

Harry Redknapp fight FA

HARRY REDKNAPP last night vowed to batter the FA if they charge him for his blast at ref Mark Clattenburg.

The Spurs boss was raging after Clattenburg awarded Manchester United a controversial second goal at Old Trafford on Saturday.
FA chiefs will decide today whether to take action against Redknapp for speaking out.

But Harry promised there would be repercussions if he is punished and said: "I would be sick. I wouldn't take that lying down, no chance.
"Good luck if they want to make an issue of what I said - I'll make some issues, too."
Redknapp hit the roof after Clattenburg allowed Nani's farcical goal to stand.
He added: "If I cannot come on TV and answer a question in a truthful manner then we shouldn't be dragged out.
"Don't expect me to go on TV after a game ever because I won't. I don't care if it's in the rules.
"I'd much rather stay in the dressing room and speak to the players.
"When I'm asked a question I give a truthful answer - he made a right mess of it and I stand by that 100 per cent.
"If you want me to talk rubbish and say it was a good decision then don't bother getting me out after a game.
"Are we supposed to tell it as it was or tell it as it wasn't or just say, 'I didn't see it?'"

Benitez cryptic attack on Roy Hodgson

Rafael Benitez has launched another cryptic attack on the current regime at Liverpool, this time lambasting successor Roy Hodgson.
Almost two weeks to the day since hitting out at then-managing director Christian Purslow and comparing his own departure from Anfield to a bottle of milk, Benitez claimed Hodgson could not "see a priest on a mountain of sugar".
Inter Milan boss Benitez, back in England for Tuesday night's Champions League game at Tottenham, was responding to accusations from Hodgson that he had banned club ambassador and scout Kenny Dalglish from Liverpool's Melwood training ground during his time in charge.
"I think that Mr Hodgson, he doesn't understand," Benitez said. "Every single press conference is even worse than the last one. He's talking about things that he doesn't know.
"And some people cannot see a priest on a mountain of sugar.
"Maybe he hasn't been in Liverpool too long. We gave the fans their pride - again. We fought for the fans, we fought for the club and we fought for our players. So maybe he cannot understand this."
He added: "I brought back Kenny Dalglish to do a role in the club and Christian Purslow gave him another role.
"He (Hodgson) doesn't know but I will explain it to him.
"So, instead of talking about the flips or the flops, he has to concentrate on his players, try to do his best. He has a good job to do."
Once again defending his own record as Liverpool manager during a six-year reign that ended in the summer, Benitez said: "They've signed nine players.
"With £10million net spending, I left that squad with £300million value, 13 internationals.
"So, instead of talking about flips and flops, he has to concentrate on his job, try to do his best and not talk about the level of his players or the new players.
"Concentrate, try to do your best because it will be the best for the club and it will be the best for the fans."

Ferdinand will miss face Bursaspor this morning

RIO FERDINAND was left at home this morning as Manchester United headed to Turkey for tomorrow's Champions League clash with Bursaspor.

United have not given an official reason for Ferdinand's absence but it could be a precautionary measure due to the central defender's long-standing back problems.
With crucial Premier League games against Wolves and Manchester City coming up, the four-hour flight would do little to ease the 31-year-old England skipper's discomfort.
But Ferdinand claims his absence has nothing to do with any fitness concerns.
Speaking on his official Twitter page, he said: "Just finished training this morning, good running session done.
"Reports that I'm not travelling to Turkey coz it will affect my back are once again WRONG. Where do they get this rubbish from?
"I am not injured and IF I was, you would hear it here first!"
Squad: Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Amos, Rafael, Brown, O'Shea, Vidic, Smalling, Evra, Fabio, Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Carrick, Eikrem, Obertan, Park, Bebe, Berbatov, Hernandez
